Sybil Fay Gandy and her twin brother Sidney Ray were born October 31, 1939 in Morales, Texas. Sybil and her six brothers Wallace, Roland, Harvey, Sid, Otto & Earl grew up like most Texans in rural communities at the time living simply, working hard, raising much of their own food and loving family. Being the only sister Sybil received her share of teasing from her brothers, but they were also her loving protectors – and she loved each of them back. The family left their farm in Morales and moved to Edna when Sybil was 14. She and her brother all attended Edna High School where Sybil graduated in 1957. Sybil worked as a waitress through high school at a local restaurant to help the family and while working there she met Arthur Samuel Harris, Jr. and they married in June of 1958. A fiercely independent and strong-minded woman, Sybil unlike most women of her day, continued working until the arrival of her first child John Samuel Harris. She took on the mantle of stay-at-home mom and her second child Janet Lea Harris was born in 1965. Her husband traveled for his work which left Sybil at home to not only raise her children but tend their home in the west Houston suburb of Spring Branch and manage all the family's finances. Sybil was not only the perfect suburban mom but took on many jobs and roles that were usually left to fathers since she was alone with the children most of the time. Her home was the center for all the neighborhood children and families to gather. There was always a homemade treat and something to drink for kids and parents alike when they visited. Sybil was always there to take care of a neighbor's kids or do whatever she could to help when they were in need. Each year she was the elementary school room mother for both her children's classes, the school library volunteer and the Cub Scout den mother. Additionally, she imparted her love of God to her children taking them to church choir practices, vacation bible school, UMYF where she was a parent volunteer as well as Sunday school and church every week. Knowing how important a good education was for a successful life, Sybil returned to the workforce over the objections of her husband as her children entered college. She worked so they could focus on classes and studies allowing them to earn two college degrees each – she was proud to tell people about the four degrees she worked for. Returning to work in 1979, Sybil found a decades long career as a deli/bakery manager for Brookshire Brothers grocery stores in Dayton, Liberty & Katy, Texas. She loved sharing her skills as a cook & baker with her customers until she retired in 2014. Sybil Harris passed away April 19, 2020 after a lengthy battle with Alzheimer's. She is survived by her son Sam Harris and his husband Jerry Garza, her daughter Janet Harris and her brother Sid Gandy as well as beloved sisters-in law, cousins, nieces and nephews.
