Stanton Janney Abell, Sr., 87, died at Worland Healthcare and Rehab. Center in Worland on Tuesday, March 25, 2008.

He was born on June 20, 1920 in Basin a son of Wilbur Forrest and Julia Bea (Janney) Abell.

He was raised in Worland where he attended schools. After the eighth grade he went to work for his father in the family business, Abell's Auto Service which was located on the north edge of Worland.

He married Grace Downey in 1938 in Billings, Mont. They had a daughter Frances Abell. They later divorced.

Stanton moved to Long Beach, Calif. in 1941 to work in the shipyards. He then joined the U. S. Army in January 1942 (WWII), and spent time in Texas, Great Britain, North Africa and Italy. He was discharged in August 1945 and returned to the area.

He got a job learning to operate a dragline at Cowley. While doing that he met Pearl V. (Ross) Winchester and married her on March 19, 1946 in Livingston, Mont. The couple then lived in Lovell until moving back to Worland in 1948. They had two children, Stanton Jr. and Joanne.

Stanton then worked for the Big Horn Canal Co. and for the Rex Allison Farm south of Basin as a dragline and heavy equipment operator for several years. He also worked as a heavy equipment mechanic at T & E Equipment just north of Worland for a short time. In 1962 he went to work for the Bureau of Land Management as a heavy equipment operator and retired in 1978.

Stanton was proud of his army service, and in 1984 he took his three children to Italy to show them where he was during World War II. He was a member of the American Legion and the V.F.W., and was a life long member of the First Baptist Church.

His hobbies included watching baseball on TV, traveling in the winters to Zapata, Texas, fishing, hunting with an occasional trip to Canada.

He was preceded in death by his wife Pearl on July 31, 2002; by his parents and a brother, Wilbur Abell; by his daughter, Frances French and her husband Richard; and by two grandsons, Jim and Roger French.

Stanton is survived by his son, Stanton J. (Linda) Abell, Jr. and by his daughter Joanne (Keith) Kornetzke, both of Worland; by his grandchildren, Tim French, Bob French, Brian Abell and Darcie Armstrong; and by his great grandchildren, Levi, Jacob, Stephanie, Sierra and Dylan.

The cremains will be buried in the family plot in Riverview Cemetery in Worland.
