Betty was born April 5, 1939 to Gaines Brittian and Leola Estella Smith in Rotan, TX. She graduated from Rotan High School in 1957. She married Oscar Ray Tankersley on September 21, 1957. They lived in Rotan until December 1966 when they moved to Blackwell.

Betty worked at Oak Creek Grocery Store until she went to work at Blackwell School. She worked at the Blackwell School from October 1986 to November 2022. She loved to read and work cross word puzzles. She loved being around people and loved to talk. Her favorite thing about working at the school in the library was she could see everyone and talk to them when they came into the library. She was Daddy's sidekick---always where he was, she was also.

Survivors include daughters, Valarie Ragland and husband Grady of Sweetwater and Patricia Williams and husband Mike of San Angelo; son, Ray Tankersley and wife Melissa of Carrollton; five grandchildren Ryan Ragland and wife Melissa, Ashley Martel and husband Jeremiah, Clint Scott, Miranda Harrison and husband Jeremy, Helena Endress and husband Dominic; nine great-grandchildren Asher, Stella, Lillian, Jordon, Kinsey, Dylan, Landon, Gage, Hagen; brother, Wayne Smith and wife Tina; sister, Nelda Cox; sisters-in-law, Rita Boyd, Debra Greer, Tina Smith and Cheryl Whatley; and brother-in-law, Larry Tankersley.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Oscar; baby brother, Lloyd Dean; and her parents.

The family would like to extend a special thanks to the administration and staff to the Blackwell School for being so kind and helpful to mom. We would also like to say a very, very special thanks to all the staff at Sagecrest for taking such good care of mom and loving her to the very end: Ilse, Lisa, Joanna, Dita, Damian, Bebe, Marlene, Daisy, Alissa, Victoria, Katy, Maegan, Glendora, Nina, Danielle, Frances, Jenny, Alex, Priscilla, Bridgette, and Lacy.

Pallbearers will be Gage, Dylan, Landon, Hagen, Larry Tankersley and Charles Ragland.
