In 1883 with his parents he moved to Pleasant, Kansas, later moving to Greenwood County, Kansas.
January 31, 1884 he was married to Miss Olive Gardner. To this union were born seven children, five girls and two boys. On infant daughter preceded her father in death as well as Nora at the age of 21 and Cora Greenwell at the age of 28 years.
When realizing his time was near he called his children on Wednesday before his death Saturday morning saying how happy it made him to have all his children at his bedside, "God bless everyone of you, I won't be here but a few more hours."
Those left to mourn his passing are: Tressie Greenwell of Eads, Colorado, Edd Hammer of Chivington, Colorado, Lee Hammer of Dewitt, Missouri, Bessie Seymour of Reece, Kansas; fourteen grandchild, nine great-grandchildren, and twelve great-great-grandchildren; two brothers Henry and Robert Hammer of Rosilia, Kansas, nieces and nephews and a host of friends.
The funeral service was held at the Reece Christian Church Sunday afternoon at 2:30 with the Rev. Bert Sutton of Eureka in charge. Interment was at the Reece Cemetery.
