Mrs. J. A. Hawkins died at her home in Philomath, July 14, at the age of 47 years of cancer. Service conducted by Rev. J. R. Parker in the M. E. Church at Philomath. Interment in Newton Cemetery. Husband, four sons, and three daughters survive.

Vashti A. Smith was born June 14, 1849, in Jackson County, Mo., near Kansas City. She moved to Greenwood County with her parents in 1859; was married to J. A. Hawkins, January 9, 1872, and moved to Oregon in 1876 (Corvallis Gazette.)

Mrs. Hawkins has four sister and two brothers living in this county. Mrs. L. S. Stowe and Mrs. W. C. Hoover of Quincy, Mrs. W. F. Osborn and Chas. D. Smyth of Virgil, Mrs. Kate Stewart and J. M. Smyth of Eureka and one sister, Mrs. R. L. Osborn in Oklahoma.

Mrs. Hawkins and husband both located in Greenwood County in the 50's. She in 1859 and he in 1857 and grew to man and womanhood there. Mrs. Hawkins is the first death since that of Wm. E. Smythe in 1865.
