Bake started studying Literature at Leiden University in 1772, but switched to study Medicine a year later. He obtained his Doctorate in 1779 and moved to Woerden, Zuid-Holland (nowadays part of Utrecht), where he became the City Doctor. In 1787, he returned to Leiden, where he started working as the City Midwife, as well as Lecturer in the obstetrics. In 1795, Bake became one of the 5 curators of Leiden University, but he was honorably discharged in 1804. He then moved to The Hague, where he again became Lecturer in the obstetrics.
