Carl Newton Tyson, aged 74, died at home on May 16, 2023. Carl was born in Gladewater, Texas (Gregg County) on May 13, 1949. He grew up in East Mountain, Texas. He attended college at Wichita State University on a football scholarship, then earned a master's degree and a PhD in Western American History at Oklahoma State University. He was the author of eight books and more than twenty articles on the history of the American West. Carl pursued a career in publishing, moving to Austin, Texas in 1999 to work for Thinkwell until his death. The historian in Carl likely would have valued a full recounting of the many places he lived and the many places he worked, but the storyteller in him likely would have understood that justice cannot be done to a life such as his in the reporting of such facts. What seems right to say now is that Carl lived a rich and full life in which he succeeded at many things, but the most important to him seemed to be showing people love.
