James was the youngest child of John Edward White Sr. and Roberta Henrietta (Bowman) White.

On 9 January 1915, James marrie3d Anna Mabel Murphy (1887 Kansas ) who had come to Idaho in 1911 to teach school. She was the daughter of John Francis Murphy (Find A Grave 58440201) and Eliza (Edwards) Murphy (Find A Grave 58440219). She may have died in 1982 in Clark Fork, Bonner County, Idaho.

On 5 June 1917, James registered for the World War I draft as a resident of Clarks Fork, Idaho. He was married and a farmer. A note says "first two toes on left foot amputated." James enlisted in the U.S. Army on 13 December 1917. On 24 January 1918, as a private in the 20th Engineers, Co. F (18th Co.), he sailed from New York City aboard the troopship, SS "Tuscanai," which was torpedoed and sank on 5 February 1918 in the North Channel between Scotland and Ireland by German submarine UB-77. There were 215 casualties.

James returned from war aboard the "Iowan" in June 1919. On both voyages, he had listed Mrs. James E. White of Clarks Fork, Idaho, as his next-of-kin. His military service number was 250,754.

In the 1920 census, James and Anna reside in Clarks Fork, Bonner County, Idaho where James is a farmer.

In 1930, James and Anna also live in Clarks Fork ID. They have been joined by son James Edward White Jr., born 22 May 1926 in Spokane, Spokane County, Washington. James Jr. died 7 January 2002.

In the 1940 census, the family iof three is listed twice. On 3 April 1940, they are found in Foothills, Spokane County, Washington, where James is a distributor of explosives and Anna is a private secretary. They are also listed on 5 April 1940 in Clarks Fork, Bonner County, Idaho, where James is listed as a farmer with stock and grain.

In 1950, James Ed White, Anna and son James E. Jr. live in Spokane County, Washington. James Sr. is both a farmer and a distributor of explosives.

Shortly before James's death in April 1958, he and Anna had celebrated their 53rd anniversary in January 1958.
