BACA - Maria "Paublita" Z. Baca was born in Socorro, New Mexico on December 10, 1909 when New Mexico was still a territory. Paublita was born to Adelfina Torres and Estevan Zimmerly. She was raised and educated in Socorro, graduating from Socorro High School as valedictorian. She continued her education in Albuquerque, New Mexico, earning a teaching degree. Paublita taught school in a little one room school house in Veguita, New Mexico. Paublita met the love of her life, Santiago Baca, and they were married February 13, 1932 at the Immaculate Conception Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Santiago was a businessman and Paublita joined him. Hand in hand they ran a grocery and clothier business on Garfield Street in Socorro. The stores were known as "La Bajada" Grocery and Baca's Clothier. For 22 years Paublita and Santiago operated La Bajada Grocery store which was later the site of Scotty's Hardware. Baca's Clothier was next to the grocery store for a number of years. A fire destroyed the clothier store in 1960. Santiago passed away in 1961 and Paublita continued in business, opening "The Fabric Shop" which was located on Park Street (the building that now houses the County Manager's office). Paublita and Santiago had five (5) children. Two (2) sons and three (3) daughters. One of the sons, Steven, passed away shortly after birth. Paublita is preceded in death by her parents, Adelfina and Estevan Zimmerly; a son, Steven Baca; a daughter, Frances Baca and husband Robert "Bobby" Baca; two brothers, Steve Zimmerly and Max Zimmerly; four sisters, Lupe Estrada, Gertrude Archuleta, Ida Manning, and Cecilia Zimmerly; and a grandson, Joseph Baca. Paublita is survived by a brother, Albert Zimmerly; a son, Jimmy Baca and wife Prescilla; daughter Josie Visocky and husband Adrian; daughter Judy Vaiza and husband Shorty. Paublita is also survived by 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren and one great great grandchild, many nieces and nephews and a loving extended family. Paublita was a loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother who shared her "love," her "smiles" and her "wisdom" with all who knew her and all who came into contact with her. Paublita was a pillar of this community and a frontierswoman who not only lived history but was a part of history. Honest and enterprising as a businesswoman, active and conscientious as a citizen, and liked and respected as a good neighbor. Rosary will be recited Wednesday, September 26 at 10:00am followed by Mass at San Miguel Church.
