Andrew Mathias Boyd has passed away the the Northeastern Nevada Regional hospital at the age of 95. He was born to Q Dallas and Laura Glaser Boyd. He grew up on the ranches his father acquired on Rabbit Creek and South Fork and the Randolph Ranch near Halleck. His father continued to operate the construction outfit as well as ranching and contracting hay and threshing, so Andrew, his two brothers and two sisters were kept busy from an early age. He remembered the day he got seven 3-year-old mustangs as pretty much the high point of his life. Although, late in his life he sometimes forgot the names of his children and friends he remembered the names of men he rode with on those cow crews long ago, the brands and marks of the various outfits, the range events of those times and particularly the rough jokes they played on one another. Until the end of his days he could recall the long list of his horses, their names and character. He attended school first at Peko, the schoolhouse being located between his father's ranch on Rabbit Creek and his grandfather's ranch on the river, then at Halleck and at last at the Boyd School on the ranch on Rabbit Creek. He commuted, with his brothers and sisters through sometimes brutal weather, on horseback and by buggy. His grades were good, though he took no credit; "They made me learn" he said. He remembered one teacher who stood over him, hickory stick in hand, to keep his mind on his studies and another, at the Halleck School, that placed a Colt revolver on her desk each morning prior to calling class to order. On June 16, 1935, he married Christina Anderson, a teacher employed at Boyd School. They moved to the Randolph Ranch near Halleck where they both lived the remainder of their lives. A good team, they dedicated themselves to the hard work of ranch life, and with the help of their three children, increased the size of the ranch. He is survived by his sister, Christine Gordon of Elko, his daughter, Elizabeth Wines of Citrus Heights, Calif., son, Andrew Q. Boyd (Lynne), of Elko and his grandchildren: Deborah Wines of Citrus Heights, Michelle Rasina (Derek) and Jack Wines (Julie) of Roseville, and Russell Boyd (Crystal) of Halleck, Troy (Andrea) McDonough of Missoula, Mont., Ryan McDonough of Elko, and Shaelan McDonough of Tucson, Ariz.; his great-grandchildren, Alyssa and Q D Boyd of Halleck, and Brooke and Ashley Rasina of Roseville. He was preceded in death by his parents, his brothers, Averill and Alvin, his sister, Laura Gerber, Christina, his wife of 61 years, and his son Jack L. Boyd.
