Gail and her family moved to Washington, DC in 1955. Growing up in a close-knit family in Marshall Heights and Shaw neighborhoods, she had a memorable childhood. She was educated in the District of Columbia Public Schools and graduated from Spingarn High School. She attended DC Teachers College and graduated from the University of the District of Columbia with a Bachelor of Arts in Accounting.
Gail became a member of the Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Kappa Alpha Chapter, Zeta Phi Beta Sorority, Incorporated, Kappa Alpha Chapter member in 1983 at the University of the District of Columbia. In 1984 at the International Boule in Anaheim, CA, she was elected National Third Anti-Basileus. Gail loved the sisterhood, and her enthusiasm inspired her sister to join. She felt strongly about the sorority's principle of service and found ways for the chapter to give back to the community.
She was a member of Brown Memorial AME Church and served as the Executive Assistant to the Pastor. Gail took pride in preparing the bulletin for Sunday Worship Service, attended Bible Study, and enjoyed being a member of the Political Action Ministry.
Gail enjoyed working with computers. Whenever there was a new computer software program, she studied the manual extensively to master the use of the application, even if it meant staying up all night. She had a special gift when it came to tutoring the youth in her life, and it made her extremely happy to see their grades improve from failing to passing. She loved photography, arts, and crafts. She devoted much of her time and energy to being a football "Mom" to the players on the teams her son coached.
She began her professional career in college as a legal secretary in the Law Offices of W. Edward Thompson and Mercer Anderson, PC. Gail's legal knowledge and accounting skills lead her to jobs in various areas, Accountant for Adgie O'Bryant, Jr., Esquire, and legal secretary for James T. Wright, Esquire; Admissions Coordinator at the University of the District of Columbia; Office Manager at Young America Works Public Charter School and Finance Manager at Beacon House, an afterschool education center.
In 2007, along with her sister Toni, she owned and operated G & T Travel with many years of success. While in the industry, she traveled nationally and internationally and cruised to various Caribbean destinations.
While she enjoyed professional services, nothing was more important than her family. She was known as the family historian, and the walls of her home were adorned with many photographs of loved ones.
She spent the last year planning and attending family gatherings, reminiscing about the good old days, and encouraging the younger generation about the importance of education and doing their best. Although outspoken and stern, all those she nurtured knew how much she loved them.
In addition to her parents, her life partner Thomas A. Vaughn, her son Thomas Darnell Vaughn, her brothers Lawrence Michael Branch, Gregory Ortez Akers, Hayward Kim Akers, her sister Cathy Ann Akers, and nephew Gregory Akers preceded her in death.
Gail leaves behind her son Maurice Vaughn; daughter-in-law Elizabeth; nine grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren, and brothers and sisters, William (Olivia), Alan (Betty), Alan (Betty), Toni (Calvert), Jeffery, and Martha; and a host of nephews and nieces, other relatives, and friends.
