James McCarty was the oldest child of Darby and Hannah McCarty . According to their Bible, James was born on July 4, 1736.

James married Martha Fugate.

James was in Lord Dunmore's War, he was stationed at the Glade Hollow Fort but didn't fight in the battle of Point Pleasant.

James and Martha would have six children;

William born April 01, 1764
Isaac born March 02, 1766
Sarah born October 29, 1767
Hannah born October 05, 1769
James born July 03, 1773
John McCarty born September 27, 1775

Martha, and her son Isaac, were boiling down Maple sap to make Maple syrup in March 1777. When Dragging Canoe, or some of his Indian Nation, noticed the smoke or steam. When they found Martha and Isaac they killed them.

The Sunderland Letter says James' son, John, would be sent to live with his mother's people, the Fugates. While the Sunderland Letter doesn't mention what happens to James' other children, Sarah is sent back to live with her grandparents, Darby and Hannah McCarty.

There is an oral family tradition that says, after James became ill he went to live with his son, William, in Hawkins County, TN. James dies there after a short illness. Leading some people to wonder if he was buried in the McCarty Cemetery.

Then there is also those who believed he died at his home in Grainger County, TN.

Where he is buried is unknown for sure.
