On June 21, 2023, a new summer morning, Larry D. Long, of Wardell, Virginia, passed away peacefully at Johnson City Medical Center, Johnson City, Tennessee. Born November 4, 1951 in Richlands, Virginia, he was a son of the late Edward M. Long, Jr. and Leona Cryder Long. A lifelong resident of the Buchanan and Tazewell county areaa, he was of the Pentecostal faith. Having a strong work ethic, Larry had worked several jobs including Island Creek Coal Company for many years. He had served as president of the UMWA Local 6842 and had owned Buffalo Land Company. He went on to form Tru-Line Pipeline LLC with his son and had formed Tru-Line Racing, where they raced several local tracks. Never meeting a stranger, Larry believed in showing oneself friendly, he was a man of faith, and very loving and generous. A devoted husband, father, and grandfather, he loved children, animals, the Bible scriptures, and Nascar.
In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by one infant son, Larry Daniel Long, Jr.
Survivors include his loving wife of forty-two years, Patty Long; one son, Adam Long and wife, Samantha of Cedar Bluff; the light and loves of his life, his two grandchildren, Greyson Cole Long and Mia Claire Long; his two fur babies, Lucy and Cocoa; four brothers, Terry Long and wife, Sue of Paducah, Kentucky, Allen Long and wife, Sheila of Manassas, Virginia, David Long and wife, Denise of Abingdon, and Randy Long and wife, Jeanie of Mavisdale; one sister, Kathy Looney of Cedar Bluff; several nieces, nephews, special family, friends, and work friends also survive.
Isaiah 40:31 But they that wait upon the Lord shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings as eagles; they shall run, and not be weary; and they shall walk, and not faint.
Funeral services will be conducted at 2:00 PM Sunday in the Honaker Funeral Home Chapel, Honaker, Virginia with Rev. Charlie Cooper officiating. Interment will follow in Greenhills Memory Gardens at Claypool Hill, Virginia.
Pallbearers will be Benjamin Taylor, Adam Hale, Robert Lawson, Jr., Scotty Long, Dennis Cappel, and Joseph Hayes.
Honorary pallbearers will be Andrew Nelson and James Lawson.
The family will receive friends at the Honaker Funeral Home on Sunday from 12:30 – 2 PM.
