John Redman, prominent citizen of Eureka and cashier of the Citizen National Bank of this place died at Wichita last Thursday night after an illness of only a few hours. Mr. Redman came down to the bank as usual Thursday morning. During the forenoon he became seriously ill and was taken home, but grew worst and was taken to Wichita on the afternoon train in the hope that an operation might prolong his life. He died short after his arrival at the hospital and before an operation could be performed. His death was the result of strangulated hernia.

John W. Redman was born in York, Pennsylvania June 21, 1864. He was the son of John W. Redman and Anna M. Redman. His ancestry was largely of Scotch and Swiss descent. His father was a soldier in the Union Army during the Civil War and was killed when John was only three months old. Mr. Redman spent his early days in Pennsylvania and came to Kansas at the age of fourteen years with his mother and stepfather. They settled in Eureka where Mr. Redman has since resided, He worked on the farm for a number of years, where he met his wife.

John married Mattie Pottorff. Two children were born to them. One, Charles, died when a young lad. The other son, Earl Burgess Redman is a resident of Kansas City. Besides the widow and one son, Mr. Redman is survived by his mother and six half borthers and sisters.

John Redman was a man of action, always. After leaving the farm he engaged in the hardware business in the firm of Redman and Tucker until 1900 when he was elected clerk of the district court for the oounty, serving four years, since which time he has been cashier of the Citizen National Bank of Eureka. He served as a member of the city council and when Eureka adopted the commission form of goverment he was elected commissioner of finance, serving three years in that capacity. He was always faithful, careful and painstaking in all his work, honest and conscientious in everything he did. He was a bighearted, outspoken man, trusted implicity by all who knew him and he had a wide acquaintance, Eureka and this community will miss John Redman.
