Charles was the son of Henry Hooker and Mary Daggett, an old Revolutionary War family. Charles joined the Sons of American Revolution. He married Maria Celia Osgood, August 15, 1859, in Northfield, Mass. Charles became an extremely wealthy merchant after he arrived in San Francisco in the spring of 1851. He was a hardware merchant and capitalist and by the 1870 census had amassed a fortune. His home was worth $112,000 and value of his personal estate was $375,000. He had three servants at this time.

Children of his marriage to Maria were: Charles Osgood Hooker; Robert Gay Hooker; Jennie May Hooker; Bessie Augusta Hooker and Florence Gertrude Hooker.

Charles died of pneumonia at the age of 83 years at his home, 967 Bush Street, San Francisco.

Buried at Mountain View Cemetery, Oakland, Alameda County, California.
