Archie Levell Sherrer was born to parents Delanie and Robert Sherrer in Nelson, Oklahoma on 16 Aug. 1917. He was known by the family as Bud. AL to friends and upon moving to Prineville in 1956 became known as Al.
He attended school at Antlers, OK, spending his senior year of school with his, beloved, Aunt Anna in Nelson, OK.
Al served in the US Navy, during WWII, from Jan 10, 1940 until Jan 23, 1946.
He served a second time during the Korean Conflict from March 10, 1951 to March 6, 1952. During his time in the Navy Al served on the USS Houston and the USS Marblehead. He was on the USS Houston at Pearl Harbor when the USS Marblehead needed a barber. Al received an honorable discharge from both duties.
After his discharge Al moved to Eugene, OR where he met Pennie Wright and the two were married on July 12, 1947.
Al and Pennie moved to Swiss Home, Oregon where they co-owned and ran a fishing lodge. During this time Al worked at a sawmill and continued his barbering. He continued part time barbering until his death.
Two boys were born during this time, Robert Lawrence, Larry,f and Jerry Lee.
In 1956, after visiting a sister and her family in Prineville, OR Al and Pennie decided to move. He opened City Barbershop and on North Main, and worked there for over 40 years.
He was a member of the Prineville Elks Lodge, BPOE 1814; where he was a past exalted ruler and treasurer. While the boys were in school Al became an active member on the school board. He was a member of the Masonic Lodge No. 76. AF and AM for 5 plus years. Knights Templar No. 18, the Cryptic Masons No. 4, the Al Kader Shrine, The Royal Arch Masons No.33, the Scottish Rite 32 Deg., and the Order of the Amaranth. He was, also, a member of the Prineville American Legion Post No. 29.
He loved to camp and fish often taking the neighborhood boys fishing; and his first granddaughter camping and fishing.
Al was a devoted family man spending as much time as possible with his four grand children.
He was a long time, active, member of the First Baptist Church, loved to dance, and joined several different clubs. An avid Pinochle player, master vegetable gardener, enjoyed playing pool, poker, traveling, and spending times with his many friends.
He spent winters in Yuma,Arizona the last ten years of his life.
He was survived by his companion of ten years, Wanda Mays, of Prineville. Sons Robert Lawrence, Larry, and wife Jan of Spokane, WA.; and Jerry Lee and wife Shannon of Prineville, OR. Brothers Bennett Sherrer, Leon Sherrer, Barney Sherrer, sisters Wilma and Loretta. Four grand children, Dusti Sherrer of Prineville, OR, Trevor, Blake, and Erin Sherrer of Spokane, WA.
And two great grandchildren, Arrabelle Sherrer, and Aubri Lane Kershner of Bend, OR.
Al was preceded in death by his parents, his wife Pennie, in January of 1997 and five siblings.
