Richard Allen Norton of Kendal at Hanover, NH, formerly of Hingham, MA, died June 9, 2022 in Hanover at the age of 92.

Born in 1929 in Boston, MA, Dick was the son of the late William Bunnell Norton and Mildred Smith Norton of Wellesley, MA. He attended Wellesley Public Schools and Phillips Andover. He majored in sociology at Yale College, where he graduated with honors in 1951, and received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1957.

Dick married Joanne (Colburn) Norton on June 9, 1956 and they were married for 66 years. They lived in Hingham, MA for more than 40 years before moving to Kendal at Hanover in 2004.

Dr. Norton began his medical career briefly in private practice and then with Lahey Clinic of Boston. He then moved to Tufts-New England Medical Center in 1966, where he continued for the rest of his career until his retirement in 1998. In the early 1970s, he traveled to Japan to learn endoscopic retrograde cholangiopancreatography (ERCP), a technique for using fiber-optic scopes in endoscopy, and was a pioneer in bringing the technique to the United States.

At Tufts Medical School, Dr. Norton initially taught digestive physiology, then later joined the Problem-Based Learning program, where he was a long-time advocate for having medical students take an active role in learning. He was recognized multiple times by his students with awards for excellence in teaching. On sabbatical he studied ethics at Harvard Divinity School, where he later taught "Ethics in Medical Practice." He was also a member of the New England Medical Center's Ethics Committee for more than a dozen years. Dr. Norton was named Professor Emeritus of Medicine at Tufts University School of Medicine in 1999.
