Aileen F. Ballenger, 90, of Iola, Kansas, died Tuesday, March 18, 2008, at Allen County Hospital in Iola, Kansas.

She was born Aug. 15, 1917, in Norwich, Kansas, to Lawrence V. and Gladys Linden (Thomas) Wood.

She grew up in Harper County and was graduated from Zenda High School in 1936. The Wood family moved to Allen County in 1936. She continued her education, receiving a master's degree in education from Emporia State University in 1964.

She married Charles H. Ballenger. They made their home in Humboldt, Kansas.

She worked at Elmer Powell Realty and taught school. She taught for 30 years in the area including several rural schools in Rosalia, Gas and Humboldt, Kansas.

She and her husband moved to their home east of Iola in 1983 from Cherryvale.

She was a member of First Baptist Church in Iola, KS, and the Loyal Neighbors Club.

She enjoyed horses, gardening, reading, writing letters and caring for her grandchildren.

She is survived by her husband of the home; a daughter, Virginia "Ginger" Coltrane and husband, Gary, rural LaHarpe, KS; a son, Chuck, Edmond, OK; two brothers, Thomas B. Wood, Iola, KS, and Richard W. Wood, San Diego, CA; two grandchildren, Jennifer Johnson and Brian Coltrane; and two great-grandchildren.

A brother, Joseph Henry Wood, who was killed during World War II; and three sisters, Virginia J. Albright, Dorothy A. McCoy, and Muriel J. Bohrer, also died earlier.

Services will be at First Baptist Church in Iola, Kansas. Burial will be in Highland Cemetery in Iola, Kansas, undedr the direction of Waugh-Yokum & Friskel Memorial Chapels, Iola.
