Mary Ellen's lineage is traced positively to her great-grandparents Thomas and Hannah (Pittenger) Browne in Frederick County, Maryland. It has been suggested that Thomas was from a family that Governor Leonard Calvert brought to Maryland on the ships "Ark" and "Dove", but that claim has not been substantiated.

Mary Ellen was not yet 11 years old when her parents died in 1858. How she came to marry John Johnston of Waynesboro, Pennsylvania has not been discovered, but her sister Susan Phoebe Alice Brown married John's brother Washington Johnston. Perhaps the surviving orphaned Brown children had been placed in the care of someone who lived rather closer to the MD-PA line and took them to the Harbaugh Reformed Church, where the Johnstons worshipped.

However the Brown-Johnston marriages came about, Mary Ellen's took place on 10 April 1871 and came to fruition with 10 children, one of whom died in infancy. The other child not linked below is ...
