Gilbert Bitler was born April 26, 1860 at St. Johns, Ohio, and died at Eureka, Kansas October 19, 1919, at the age of 59 years, 5 months and 23 days.

When 17 years of age he left his western home and came to Kansas, where for the past forty-two years he has done a man's part in the development of this great commonwealth.

He was united in marriage to Carrie C. Ladd of South Salem twonship of this county on December 20, 1882, and to them four children, three sons and one daughter, all of whom with the sorrowing wife, are left to mourn the death of one whose place in the family circle cannot be filled, but whose memory will be cherished in their hearts through all the years to come as a kind and loving husband and a father, a wise counsellor, and a man whose example has proven an inspiration to all with whom he has been closely associated.

After 19 years spent at farming in Greenwood County, Mr. Bitler removed with his family to Eureka and accepted the position of Cashier of the Citizen National Bank of this city. He retained this place for ten years, since which time he has been vice-president of the bank, but actively engaged in the stock and raching business with his sons.

The illness which terminated in his death dates from last November, when he became ill in Wichita on his way to Texas. He has suffered greatly, but with great patience and cheerfulness, a confort to thoses about him, uncomplainingly biding the time when the final summons might come.

The funeral service, conducted by Rev. Paul Mennenoeh, was held at the family residence in east Eureka Tuesday, October 21, at 3 p.m.

As a tribute of respect to one who has been a leader in all goo things for the community, the banks and business of Eureka were closed during the service and the large gathering of people at the funeral attested the esteem in which this good man was held by his neighbors and friends. Interment was in the Greenwood Cemetery.
