Funeral for Myra M. Crawford, 82, Lawton, will be at 2 p.m. Tuesday at Boulevard Christian Church with Dr. Ralph Alexander officiating.

She died Saturday, March 22, 2008.

Private graveside service with military honors will be held Wednesday at Fort Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, under direction of Whinery-Huddleston Funeral Service.

She was born Feb. 24, 1926, in Greencove Springs, Fla., to Artie and Charity Elizabeth Hartley Crawford. She graduated from Ashford High School in Alabama when she was 16. She attended Troy University and graduated after three years. She began teaching at the age of 19 in Panama City, Fla. After two years of teaching, she enlisted in the Women's Army Corp and served for three years as a radio operator and later as an administrative clerk. After her discharge, she worked with the USO, and was stationed at Tinker Field when she retired. She received her teaching certificate from OCW in Chickasha, her master's in counseling from the University of Oklahoma, and her master's in psychology from Southwestern State University. She taught at Cyril and later in Lawton, where she became the first school psychologist employed by the Lawton Public School system. She retired from LPS in 1987, and became a counselor for disabled citizens. She worked with Goodwill Industries as a rehabilitation specialist, and became the director of rehabilitation. Goodwill Industries named the Myra Crawford Rehabilitation Center in her honor. At the time of her death, she was still working as a counselor for disabled adults with the Department of Human Services at Search Light, Inc. During her career, she also worked with several other organizations. She was one of the Oklahoma Democratic delegates to the National Convention when Jimmy Carter was elected, and was inducted into the Activist Hall of Fame in 2004. She was also a trainer for troop leaders in the Girl Scouts, and a camp director for the Sooner Girl Scouts. She was a past-president of the Lawton Professional Teachers Association, and a member of Boulevard Christian Church, where she served as an elder and a former chairman of their board.

Survivors include a brother, John Crawford; a close friend, Jane Mershon; several nieces and nephews; and many friends, co-workers and clients.

She was preceded in death by her parents; two sisters: Blondale Miller and Freddie Owens; and a brother, Rex Crawford.
