Italian Politician and Statesman. He served three times as prime minister of Italy, from 1994, 2001 to 2006, and 2008 to 2011. After graduating from the University of Milan with a degree in law, he became a real estate developer. He later went into the television business and then diversified into other business interests. In 1994, he formed the Forza Italia political party and, later that year, was elected prime minister. His first tenure as prime minister was short, as he announced his resignation in December of that year. He was convicted of corruption and fraud, but it was overturned. He remained the leader of the Forza Italia and led a center-right coalition to victory in the 2001 national parliamentary elections. He became prime minister again and went on to serve for almost five years before his coalition was defeated by a center-left coalition led by Romano Prodi in 2006. He would again serve as prime minister in 2008 after his center-right coalition won the general election. He went on to serve for three years before various scandals brought down his government in November of 2011. In 2013, he was convicted of tax fraud and served a four-year sentence. He would continue to be a major part of the Italian political scene until his death.
