Monty was the son of June Marie (nee Steele) and Raymond Richard Schunk. His father's family appear on the Indian Census rolls as part of the Yanktonai Sioux (some of whom accompanied the Lewis and Clark expedition) on the Yanktonai Reservation. The line runs to his great-grandmother, Julia Wahehe.

Monty was a retired city bus driver in the greater Minneapolis area.

Monty loved mountain biking. He went out as often as he could. He was heading down a mountain on an unfamiliar trail, when he hit a low hanging tree branch. Cause of death was severe head trauma due to the force with which he hit the branch. It not only caused severe head trauma, it also broke the top vertebrae of his spine, even though he was wearing his helmet at the time.

Monty was proceeded in death by his daughter, Anarae. He is survived by his wife, Mariana, and their sons, Tyson and Owen.
