He was born March 11, 1921 in Wheeling, the son of the late John W. and Helen L. Lewis Hyde. He was a Christian by faith and a member of the United Church of God.
John proudly served in the United States Army. He was a prisoner of war in Germany during World War II and was awarded the Purple Heart for his service in the Korean War.
After returning from the war, he worked for the finance department at Reichart's in Moundsville and was later self employed as a heavy equipment operator. John loved spending time with his children and grandchildren in the outdoors sharing his love and respect for nature. His strength and wisdom will be greatly missed.
In addition to his parents, John was preceded in death by a grandson, Luke Andrew Haynes, and four brothers; Thomas, Harry, Clarence, and Bernard.
Survivors include three daughters, Cheryl A. Lewis of Glen Dale, Phyllis J.(David) Haynes, and Donna L. (Jeff) Yeater both of Moundsville, one brother Vernon "Poke" Hyde, and three sisters; M. Louise (William) Yates of Camas, WA, L. Arlene (Howard) Cunningham of Raleigh NC, and Helen V. (Phillip) Wallace of Moundsville, and nine grandchildren; K. Alan Lewis of Dallas TX, David T. Haynes, Gail McCauley both of Moundsville, Bridgett A. Snider of Philippi, Amy Garvick of Glen Dale, Jessica Snider, J. Thad Yeater, Joseph Haynes, Jordan Haynes all of Moundsville WV, twelve great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.
A private funeral service will be held at the convenience of the family on Sunday, November 18, 2007 followed by interment at Fairview Cemetery.
