Email fm Mary Pitt, sister, 27 Jul 2012:
"Rolla was on a fire ship which was under attack and was operating a deck gun. A shell from an attacking Zero landed on the deck in front of him and blew. He was badly burned and totally blinded for quite a spell, according to the nurse who was kind enough to write home for him. He did recover and was sent back to sea. After the war, he came home, got a job in a Burlington garage and settled down with his wife and two kids. One morning he went to work, walked in the door, and dropped dead on the floor. When Margaret was told, screamed, "Oh, my God! I just got pregnant last night!" Their third child was born just 9 months later. She was heroic and raised all three of those kids by herself. According to the autopsy, Rolla had died of a "blood clot."
