Mary Smith Armistead was the 6th child of William Jordan Armistead and Mary Eliza Edwards (Baker) Armistead. She was born on 29 Feb 1832 in Decatur County, Georgia. She married John T. Bryan on 5 December 1866 in Jackson County, Florida. PMLyons

JOHN T. BRYAN: CIVIL WAR CONFEDERATE SOLDIER. Bryan enlisted in Company M First Regiment, Georgia Regulars in July 1862 at Albany, Georgia. Company "M" became Company "D" in December 1864. Bryan was never wounded except for an accident at Culpepper Court House, Virginia that resulted in a broken leg in 1862. Private Bryan "was the last sentinel that did guard duty east of the Mississippi" upon surrender in 1865. "Bryan was always at his post of duty and a better and more gallant soldier never carried a musket" (note in pension file written by F. M. Myers). Private Bryan took the oath of allegiance and was discharged 26 April 1865 at Greensboro, North Carolina. He received a CSA pension and Mary received a widow's pension after his death. PMLyons

Mary and John lived at Marianna on a 60 acre farm. They had one son, David Hamilton Bryan. John and Mary and their son, David, are buried in Riverside Cemetery at Marianna. Mary and son, David have Memorial tombstones with no dates inscribed. John T. Bryan has a CSA tombstone with the Confederate Cross of Honor symbol on the top part of the stone.
