Charles served as a 2nd Lieutenant with the "Bucktails", 13th Pennsylvania Reserves (42nd Regiment Volunteers), Company F - "The Irish Infantry" (Civil War). Charles was killed at South Mountain. He was buried for 8 days on the battlefield, but his father-in-law and wife brought his body home for burial (see inset photo).
