Williams
Shirley Maxine (Eaves)
Williams was born March 23, 1922 in Industry Kansas. She died in Kaweah Delta Hospital on March 10, 2010. Her father Everett Eaves and her mother Gertrude Mae [Cain] Eaves were both from Kansas. When Shirley was very young, the family moved to California. They spent a short time in
Corcoran and Lindsay and
settled in Woodlake. Everett built a home on Acacia Street. Shirley's siblings were Lois, Marjorie, Norman (deceased) and Jacqueline. Shirley
attended Woodlake Grammar School and High School,
graduating in 1940. She
attended Visalia Junior College, graduating in 1942 with an AA Degree. Shirley was a
Commercial major and upon graduation, went to work for Visalia Production Credit.
On Dec. 24, 1943 she
married George Williams from Lemoncove. They had their first date while still in their teens and attending VJC. At the time of their marriage, George was an Aviation Cadet in the Army Air Corps. When George graduated from pilot training, Shirley quit her job and traveled with George on his training assignments to
Greenville S.C . When he and his crew finished their training and went over seas, Shirley
returned to Visalia and Visalia Production Credit. When the war ended, George became a civilian and went to work for So. Ca. Edison.
In 1946 a son Michael was born and in 1948 a daughter Denise was the next and last addition to the family. As the years went on, Shirley and her family enjoyed camping,
fishing, backpacking in the High Sierra, paddling canoes in the wilderness area of
Minnesota and taking trips and treks through State and
National Parks. Francis Kellman and Shirley started the Steno Shop in Visalia, and
during that time Shirley joined the Business and Professional Womens Ass'n. and through them earned her CPS. George's work with SCE took them to Santa Barbara for 10 years where Shirley worked as a legal secretary. SCE moved George to Lancaster in 1970 and
Shirley went to work for the Palmdale Water District as
Secretary to the Manager.
Shirley later was promoted to Office Manager, a job she held until her retirement in 1984. Back in 1973, Shirley had the opportunity to pursue a
dream-she learned to fly. She loved flying and logged several hundred hours in their planes. She was a member of the 99s (International Association of Women Pilots). They flew all over the West, south to Cabo San Lucas and North of the Arctic Circle in Alaska. In 1993 they sold their planes and settled down on their ranch in Auckland ( between Elderwood and Badger) where they have enjoyed birds, animals, flowers and the peace and quiet of the area.
Shirley is survived by her husband George, son Michael, daughter Denise, three grandsons, on granddaughter, three great-grandsons and one great-granddaughter. Shirley is a member of the First Christian Church of Visalia. In lieu of flowers, a donation to the
Visalia Rescue Mission would be appreciated.
Visitation will be held at Miller Memorial Chapel of Woodlake on Monday, March 22, 2010 from 12pm until 1pm. Services will be held at Miller Memorial Chapel of Woodlake on Monday, March 22, 2010 at 1:00pm. Arrangements
