First Colonial Governor of British Columbia. Governor of Colony of Vancouver Island (1851-1863), First Governor of the Colony of British Columbia (1858-1864). Established the Hudson's Bay Co. at Fort Victoria, 1843. He started in the northern fur trade with the Hudson's Bay Company in 1821. At Fort Vancouver (now Washington state) he became Chief Trader in 1835 and Chief Factor in 1839. He was assigned to build up Fort Victoria when it became clear the lower Columbia River area would be ceded to the United States and Fort Vancouver lost to the HBC. Sir James Douglas is considered by many as the founder of Victoria and the "Father of British Columbia."
