Judy Swensen Baxendale

1942 ~ 2023

- Judy Swensen Baxendale

After battling Alzheimer's disease, Judy Swensen Baxendale passed away peacefully in her sleep on Monday, May 29, 2023 on Memorial Day at the age of 81. Although it robbed her of so much, Alzheimer's disease failed at stealing her memory of her loved ones, which she held onto until her last breath.

She was born on May 2nd, 1942 to loving parents Sterling and Ethel Swensen in Murray, Utah where she lived most of her life.

She met her husband Jim while working at Oak Hills Drive Inn at 17 years old and later married him on February 2nd, 1962 in Salt Lake City. After excelling in short-hand courses in high school, she worked for Hill Air Force Base Private Sector as a clerk stenographer in the accounting and finance department until they decided to start a family.

While raising her four children, Judy's hobbies included gardening, camping, boating, road trips with her family, and volunteering in many capacities including room mother, PTA, and Murray Women's Fire Department Auxiliary. Judy also had a soft spot for stray animals, taking them in whenever Jim would allow.

Judy was a member of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and served in various Relief Society and Primary callings.

Judy, Jim and family suffered a blow when their oldest daughter Stacy passed away unexpectedly in 1981 at age 15. The next year the whole family was sealed for eternity in the Salt Lake Temple on June 15th, 1982. She then kept active by starting her business JudyLyn Distributing where she delivered candy to various businesses in multiple counties. They then experienced another harsh trial when a boat accident took the lives of Jim and their youngest child Shay in 1990 leaving Judy and her children to endure life without them. She maintained her adamant belief in Heavenly Father and our Savior Jesus Christ and held onto hope that she would one day be reunited with them.

After becoming a widow at 48 years old, Judy held several jobs including UPS, Hale Center Theater, Salt Lake County Aging Services, Salt Lake County District Attorney's Office and finally Salt Lake County Criminal Justice Services from which she retired.

In her later years she enjoyed traveling with her kids and grandkids, fostering families of cats from the Humane Society, volunteering at the Murray Senior Center, and lunch dates with her beloved sister Sherrie and sister-in-law Melany.

Judy will be remembered for her devotion to her family. She was the grandma who rolled down the grassy park hills with her grandkids and was the best sport about their relentless teasing of her diet coke addiction.

She is survived by siblings Larry, Sherrie and Gary Swensen, her children Trent (Jill) and Shaury Searle (Dane), grandchildren Taylor (Mandy), McKinna, Tanner, Kameron, Ryan (Kyleigh), Nathan, and great grandchildren Drake, Shaylee, Beau, Jackson, Emelia, and soon to arrive Emma J (J for Judy). Preceded in death by husband James, daughter Stacy, son Shay, and her parents.

We wish to thank Laura from Intermountain Home Health & Hospice and the staff of Barrington Place and Pheasant View Assisted Living for their warm and compassionate care of Judy.

Funeral Services will be held Saturday, June 3, 2023 from 10:15 – 12:00 pm with a visitation prior to the funeral services from 9:00 – 10:00 am at Jenkins-Soffe Mortuary, 4760 South State Street, Murray, Utah.

Interment will be in the Murray City Cemetery.
