Elena Mae Crough was educated in NH, graduating from Manchester High school, followed by 2 years of normal school for teaching, and 2 more years at Lynn Hospital nursing school (MA) graduating in 1908. She worked for several years in nursing, private duty, as a pioneer public health nurse in NH and MA schools. She served during World War 1 as a Red Cross Nurse, sailing August 7, 1918 assigned to head a hospital in Padova, Italy, for which she received a citation from the Italian government. Upon her return to the US she worked several years as a public health nurse for the NH Tuberculosis Association. In 1922 she was appointed chief of the Division of Child Hygiene for the state of New Hampshire and supervisor of public health nursing. After her marriage she was active in Springfield MA women's clubs, and leagues of women voters.
