Lenora Smethers "Nannie" (Age 85): A Beloved Barber with a Heart of Gold

It is with both heavy hearts and fond memories that we announce the passing of Lenora Smethers, whom we all refer to as Nannie, on May 31, 2023. A visitation will be held at Oak Tree Baptist Church, 513 Seaberry Rd, Poolville, TX, at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, June 3, 2023, with services to follow at 11:00 a.m.

Born to the late Hubert and Alice Ballard on February 8, 1938, she lived in Parker County most of her life. The oldest of four children: Robert Ballard, Shiree Jane Terry, and the late H.D, "Doodle" Ballard.

Growing up helping her Dad on a peanut farm she was never a stranger to hard work and long hours. As young as two years of age riding horses was a favorite pastime.

One month after graduating from Poolville High School, as Valedictorian in 1956 she married Jerry Fulton and had three children with her late husband, who passed away in 1975. The children and their spouses still reside in Parker County: Juan Fulton and wife Rene, Sheila Ferreira and husband Frank, and Lannie Fulton and wife Susanne. Her guidance, wisdom, and impeccable work ethic shaped them into the remarkable individuals they are today. Her legacy lives on through them, as they carry forward her values of compassion, strength, and kindness.

She touched the lives of so many through her lifelong profession as a barber, beginning professionally as early as 1969.

She began her journey with dedication and passion. On every Tuesday, Friday, and Saturday, you would always find her armed with scissors and comb in hand at work at the middle chair in The Hair Shop side by side with Nipper, Bobby, and later, Sheila. On Thursday's you would find her snipping away at the only chair in her own shop located in Poolville.

Her skillful hands provided great men's cuts, but it was the connections she formed with her clients that truly set her apart. With every snip of her scissors, she shared laughter, listened to stories, and became a trusted confidante. The Hair Shop was not just a place for haircuts, but a sanctuary where friendships were nurtured and all felt welcomed.

In 1982 she became a devoted wife to her beloved husband, Waymon Smethers. Their love story was a one for the ages, a partnership filled with unwavering support and boundless affection.

One of Nannie's greatest joys came from her seven grandchildren and fifteen great grandchildren. Her legacy will forever live on through these young hearts, who will cherish her memory and carry her love in their own lives.

Though our hearts may ache, may we also celebrate the joy in knowing that she is in heaven with her Lord and Savior. She taught us the value of dedication, the power of a listening ear, and the importance of spreading kindness wherever we go.

She may have laid down her scissors, but her legacy lives on in the countless lives she touched. Rest in peace, dear Nannie, knowing that your impact will forever resonate in our hearts.
