Harry Applegate was the eldest of 11 known surviving children born to Edward T. R. Applegate and his (2nd) wife, Lavinia Ely. His father served as a NJ Assemblyman and Mercer County Judge who was very prominent in the business and political life of Mercer County and was one of the original stockholders and directors of the First National Bank of Hightstown. He was a direct descendant of Henry Applegate, an Englishman, who settled in East Windsor Township when it was comparatively a wilderness, purchasing a tract of land about 1750 on Rocky Brook, near Hightstown.

Born in East Windsor, he lived in the Hightstown area his entire life and became a very successful poultry and fruit farmer. He was one-time mayor of Hightstown from 1919-1920.

He married Isabelle Perrine Bergen in 1886 and they would have 3 daughters together. Henry died at age 65 in 1928 and his widow never remarried and survived him another 25 years.
