BLOOMINGTON — Benjamin Franklin "Bennie" Shields, age 86, of Bloomington, died Friday at his residence. Born February 13, 1922, in Bloomington, he was the son of Benjamin Warner and Bertha Arizona (Hyde) Shields. He was retired. He had formerly worked for the Indiana State Highway Department for eight years. He enjoyed working with horses. He was a U.S. Army veteran of W.W. II, where he fought in Germany and was injured. He received both a star and a Purple Heart. He was a member of the New Unionville Baptist Church.

He is survived by his three sons, Fred Shields, Joe Shields, and Bob Shields, all of Bloomington; his daughter, Mary Ann Hampton, of Bloomington and her husband Nathan and one sister, Helen Hacker of Hendricksville.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Opal Bernice (Brosman) Shields, in 1988; one son, Kenneth Wayne Shields; two brothers, Clarence Shields and Earl Shields; and two sisters, Beatrice Dover and Violet Evelyn Branam.

The funeral service will be held on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m. at the New Unionville Baptist Church, with Rev. Roger Helton officiating. Burial will follow in Unionville Cemetery.
