US Congressman. Christened Paul Thomas DeLage Sumter and called DeLage, he was the son of diplomat Thomas Sumter, Jr. (1768-1840) and the grandson of Revolutionary War General and US Senator Thomas Sumter (1734-1832). DeLage Sumter graduated from West Point in 1835 and was commissioned as a First Lieutenant. He saw action in Florida during the Seminole Wars and attained the rank of Colonel before leaving the Army. He then became owner and operator of "South Mount," the Sumter family plantation near Stateburg. In 1838 Sumter was elected to the US House of Representatives as a Democrat and served two terms, 1839 to 1843. He did not run for reelection in 1842 and returned to his plantation, also working as a teacher and surveyor, and as an Agent for the South Carolina Railroad.
