Diplomat. The son of Revolutionary War General and US Senator Thomas Sumter, in 1800 he was appointed private secretary to Robert Livingston when Livingston was Ambassador to France. In 1803 Thomas Jefferson offered Sumter the Governorship of the newly-purchased Louisiana Territory, but he declined. He served as Lieutenant Governor of South Carolina from 1804 to 1806. He was also active in the militia, attaining the rank of Colonel as commander of the Claremont Guards, a regiment originally formed by his father. In 1808 he was appointed the first US Ambassador to Brazil, serving from 1809 to 1819. Thomas Sumter, Jr. was the father of Congressman Thomas De Lage Sumter.
