Married Emma J. Drummond, December 4, 1856, Spartanburg Co., SC. Taught school at Woodruff, SC. Studied law in his father's office in Spartanburg, SC. Served in the Confederate Army as a Lieutenant under Captain Woodruff in C.E. Holcomb's Legion Regiment. Became acting adjutant of the regiment and was in 12 engagements and numerous skirmishes. Captured at Five Forks two weeks before the surrender at Appomattox and was sent to Johnson Island until released. After the war, returned to the practice of law, and bought the home on Cedar Spring Road known as Foster's Tavern from the Anthony Foster Estate. The home was built between 1810 and 1812. Served as Spartanburg Solicitor. Elected to the SC House of Representatives in 1882. Elected to the SC state Senate in 1884. Cause of death: 15 May 1886, head injuries resulting from being thrown from buggy.
