Nathan Betts was born on August 13, 1753 in Ridgefield, Connecticut. His parents, Gideon and Rachel (St. John) Betts were natives of Fairfield County, having married there on 20 December 1752, a year before his birth. Nathan, being the oldest of six children of this marriage, enlisted as a private in the Second Westchester County Regiment of New York, under the command of Col. Thomas Thomas and in the company commanded by Capt. Abijah Gilbert, and was employed in active service during the revolutionary war. The above war record can be found in the manuscript volume entitled 'Treasurer's Certificates" Vol 9. Nathan married Anna Northrup at Church of Christ in Salem, Westchester County, New York on 26 November 1773. They lived in Brunswick, Troy (Rensselaer Co.) and later settled in Lysander in the Northwest corner of Onondaga County, New York. The town was originally named Betts Corners after the store owned by Chauncey Betts, their son, and later changed to Lysander. A deed dated June 13, 1799:"[Property] from Captain Benjamin Hallet of Barnstable Massachusetts to certain Real Estate he owned in Troy New York to Nathan Betts of Troy."

"The Monument in the village of Baldwinsville contains the names of Nathan Betts, Benjamin Depuy, Henry Becker, and Miles Bennet, Revolutionary soldiers, the latter of whom gave his age as seventy four years in 1840." (Onondaga's Centennial. Gleanings of a Century", Vol 1, page 164)

In the History of Brunswick (Rensselaer County, NY): "One of the first Taverns in Brunswick was kept by Nathan Betts on the farm now occupied by Hon. Richard A. Derrick. .... The town was incorporated March 20, 1807, and on the first Tuesday of the following April the town government was organized at the hotel of Nathan Betts on "Stone road." The officers elected at that meeting were:... overseeers of highways,...Nathan Betts..."
