OTTUMWA - Violet Pearl Toopes Denniston Church Guthrie, 86, of 911 E. Fourth St., died September 21, 2004, at Hospice House.

She was born November 5, 1917 in Ottumwa, Iowa to Jasper and Emma Collier Toopes. She married William G. Denniston Sr. in 1934, he preceded her in death. She married Leonard W. Church in 1953. He preceded her in death. She married Leland "Mike" Guthrie in 1985.

She had worked at the Ottumwa Naval Air Base, the Ordinance Plant in Burlington and as a cook at the Holiday Inn of Otturnwa for many years. Pearl was perpetual motion with her hands. She kept a lot of people in stitches with her sewing, mending, knitting, tatting and crocheting, also known as Pearl's Sewing. Pearl was active in her church and in Disabled American Veterans and the DAR.

She is survived by her husband Mike; her children, William (Anita) Denniston Jr. of Ottumwa, Hazel (David) Countryman of Monticello, Iowa, Judie (William) Miller of Ottumwa, Rev. Richard (Estelle) Denniston of Memphis, Tennessee, John L. (Joann) Denniston, Iowa, James (Ann) Denniston of Cedar Rapids, Iowa and Michelle Church (Gary) of Ottumwa; 13 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; and 4 great great-grandchildren; 2 brothers, John and Raymond Toopes both of Ottumwa; 6 sisters, Tressie Ruby and Juanita Paulos both of Ottumwa, Betty Katzenberger of Illinois, Mable Headly of Otturnwa, Ferne Pate of Omaha, Nebraska and Pat Long of Ottumwa. Her special people were her niece, Betty Root Wymore and Cindy and Rachel Grant.

She was preceded in death by her parents; 3 brothers, Leonard, Robert and Samuel Toopes; 2 sisters, Maxie Root and Lydia Waldon; and 6 grandchildren.

Her body has been cremated and burial will be at a later date at Shaul Cemetery near her beloved sister, Maxie, and their mother.
In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Hospice House, 312 E. Alta Vista, Ottumwa, Iowa 52501
