Death Of An Old Settler - Woodville
James Barkwith, a very old resident, died very suddenly on Saturday night at 11 o'clock. He was only ill about half an hour. Deceased lived for twenty-six years here and was 63 years of age
Woodville Examiner, 30 Oct 1911
OBITUARY It is with great regret that we record the death of Mr James Barkwith, which took place with startling suddenness on Saturday evening, from heart failure. He had been about during the day and was enjoying very good health. He partook of a little supper about 10 o'clock. Shortly afterwards he felt a little queer and retired to bed, telling his wife that she had better send for the doctor. When Dr Mules arrived, Mr Barkwith had almost collapsed and the members of the family were immediately summoned. Mr Barkwith never rallied and died in about half an hour from the time he felt queer.
Mr Barkwith was born in the County of Middlesex sixty-three years ago and served his time to the trade of gunsmith and was for a number of years employed in the Royal Small Arms Factory at Enfield. Determined to see whether he could not improve his position by emigrating, he came to New Zealand in the first trip of the British Queen, about twenty-six years ago (sic, British King, 22 Dec 1883) and spent a few months in Masterton. He then removed to Woodville and has remained here ever since, in business for himself. A very skillful man with guns, locks and machinery generally, he was constantly kept busy and will be much missed.
Mr Barkwith was a man of very genial and kindly disposition and made many friends. He was a Trustee and P.C.R. of Court Woodville, A.O.F., and was also an enthusiastic fireman, having been a member of the Woodville Fire Brigade from its inception and having been within three months of being able to claim his gold star for twenty-five years service. He was also lieutenant and captain of the Brigade on several occasions. He took a fair share of interest in public matters generally.
He leaves a widow and family who are all grown up. His daughters include Mesdames Whitelaw, T. Hughes and W. Allan. The youngest daughter is not yet married and the youngest and only son is in the post office at Takapau. Very general sympathy will be felt with the mother and family in their severe loss.
The funeral takes place at the Woodville Cemetery to-morrow at 2 o'clock.
