On Wednesday, April 19, 2023, our hearts were saddened by the transition of our beloved LaTonya Deneen Brown. LaTonya was born on December 29, 1968, to Robert and Barbara Claiborne in Waverly, Virginia.

LaTonya is survived by her husband George A. Brown; two sons, Paul C. Holmes Jr. and Christian S. Holmes; one daughter LaCiara C. Holmes; one step-son, Kenneth Bailey; three step-daughters, Shaquita Bailey, Kiara Bailey and Ja'Kitta Bailey; steadfast mother, Barbara Claiborne; father, Robert Claiborne; father-in-law George T. Brown; mother-in-law Florence R. Brown, three sisters, Jacqueline Claiborne, Charlene Shaw (William), and Joann Barkley (Bernard); four brothers, Ronnie Brock (Marion), Larry Jones, Michael Lockett (Alice) and Jeffrey Crocker; three brothers-in-law, Terrace Brown, Melvin Brown (Louvirdia) and Calvin Saunders (Liena); two sisters-in-law, Tracey Walker (Steven) and Celestine Shaw; seven aunts, Shirley Winfield, Sarah Claiborne, Lavertta Claiborne, Delores Claiborne, Cora Claiborne, Margarita Winfield, and Isabelle Claiborne; one uncle, Jessie Winfield (Cheryl); eleven grandchildren and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, extended family and friends.

LaTonya attended Sussex County Public Schools, graduating from Sussex Central High School in 1986. LaTonya was also a member of the basketball team during her time in high school. After high school, LaTonya continued her studies and basketball at Norfolk State University. LaTonya was a devoted member of Higher Way Ministries in Petersburg, Virginia. She devoted her hard work to Sussex and Surry County Public Schools as a bus driver until her health began to decline. LaTonya enjoyed dancing and listening to music with a cold Pepsi. She was a loyal advocate for her family.

She was preceded in death by her biological sisters, Robin Claiborne, and Annette Claiborne-Conaway, maternal grandmother; Maude Winfield Tyler, fraternal grandparents Guy and Lula Claiborne, sixteen uncles, and four Aunts.

Celebration of Life will be held 12Noon, Saturday, April 29, 2023, at Oak Grove Baptist Church, Wakefield, Virginia, Rev. Leslie Holloway, Pastor, and Rev. Jerry Parham, eulogist. Interment will follow at Waverly Cemetery.
