When Joel Adams was born on September 18, 1740, in Simsbury, Connecticut, his father, Timothy, was 24 and his mother, possibly Lois Griswold Adams, was 19. He married Lucy Loomis on April 14, 1760, in Hartford, Connecticut. They had 9 known children in 15 years. He fought in the American Revolutionary War in Connecticut and New York. 1786 Joel was elected Whitehall, New York Town Supervisor and Road Inspector where he married his second wife Molly and they had 2 more known children. He ran a Tavern first in Cambridge, New York then in Whitehall, New York. In Whitehall the Adams Tavern is now called Bayside House. On Wood Creek Road south of Whitehall Joel owned a farm where a Goldmine claim was filed in 1793. Joel Adams and Cynthia Giddings (Cynthia Giddings later married Joel's son Demas Adams) witnessed the codicil to Lewis Hinman's Will in 1807 along Woodcreek Road. Lewis Hinman was husband of Lucy Adams Hinman and Joel Adams Son in Law. Before 1810 Joel Adams and several of his children moved to Worthington, Ohio where other's from Simsbury, CT had moved. In 1815, Joel and son Demas Adams patented a sheep Wool fabric making machine in Franklin County, Ohio. In 1818 Joel and son Demas Adams built a house that is called Demas Adams house. Joel Adams Sr died on June 5, 1823, in Worthington, Ohio, having lived a long life of 83 years, and was buried there. His beautiful gravestone is still standing at St Johns Episcopal Cemetery.

Gravesite Details

Joel Adams was originally interred about 50-60 feet west of the current site of his headstone. The grave and stone were moved to their current location in the mid-1990s.
