United States Air Force Top Gun Pilot, Aerial Photographer, Author. After graduating from East Carolina University with a degree in History. He enlisted with the United States Air Force and trained as a pilot. Attaining the rank of Major, he was assigned as a Foreign Air Advisor during the Vietnam War and went on to fly 212 support missions. During a mission in 1973, his plane was shot down by enemy fire near the Cambodian Boarder and crash-landed in the jungle. Unable to initially escape, Shul was trapped in the wreckage while the plane burned and the fire was so intense that his helmet melted. Somehow, he survived and was able to crawl out of the remains and managed to prevent from being captured when enemy patrols searched the area. He would be rescued by a Special Forces team. After enduring a lengthy period of recovery which included 15 operations, Shul was able to pass a physical and return to active duty. He served as a fighter instructor and for more than twenty-years, he was an aerial photographer. He went on to pilot the world's fastest jet, the SR-71 Blackbird. From these experiences, he authored a series of books which include "Sled Driver: Flying the World's Fastest Jet" (1994).
