Betty Jean Guard, 81, Friendsville, died Monday, March 17, 2008, at Egle Nursing Home, Lonaconing.

Born Aug. 14, 1926, in Jefferson Township, Pa., she was a daughter of the late John R. and Mabel E. (Weigle) Gilmore. She was also preceded in death by her husband, Leslie G. Guard Sr., Jan. 11, 2000.

Betty graduated from Clairton High School, Clairton, Pa., attended the University of Pittsburgh, and was a homemaker.

She served as chairman and president of the Garrett County Farm Bureau Women's Committee, the Friendsville Community Action Committee, the Friendsville Homemaker's Club, and the Friendsville Elementary PTA.

Betty was also the secretary and treasurer of Mill Run Mercy Chapel, Mill Run. She previously held the position of secretary/treasurer of the Garrett County Steering Committee and served as a Farm Bureau Women's Committee director numerous times. She held similar posts with the Garrett County Fair Association and the Friendsville Bicentennial Association.

Other activities include the Pennsylvania Farmers' Union, Maryland Area I Dairy Princess Committee, Garrett County Health Committee, and Selbysport Women's Society of Christian Service.

Betty served for 18 years as a director on the Somerset Rural Electric Coop Board as well.

She is survived by two sons; two daughters; one brother; one sister; and six grandchildren.

A service was conducted at the Mill Run Mercy Chapel on Friday at 11 a.m., with the Rev. Daymond Schmuck officiating.

Interment followed in the church cemetery.

Pallbearers were all of her grandchildren.
