United States Congressman. A member of the Democratic Party, he served Texas's 17 Congressional District in the United States House of Representatives from 1979 to 2005. He received his Master of Science degree in Agriculture from the University of Texas, and following graduation, he ran his family's cotton farm. He succeeded longtime Congressman Omar Burleson in the United States House of Representatives, and during his tenure, Stenholm displayed a Conservative philosophy and supported legislation of the Reagan Administration. He served as a ranking member of the House Agriculture Committee. Following his district's gerrymandering, he was unsuccessful in reelection in 2004 and was succeeded by Robert "Randy" Neugebauer. After leaving office, he served as a consultant for a Washington law and lobbying firm in addition to serving as an adjunct Professor of Agriculture at Tarleton State University.
