Note: middle name Carl on one record and Clyde on another. He was enumerated as Carl Shields in the 1910 census with his parents in Rayne Pennsylvania. In 1920 he was enumerated as Carl also, then age 13 and the family resided in Indiana Pennsylvania.His father was a coal miner and worked as a weigh man.

Son of Philip Cylde Shields and Sarah Jane (Black) of Pennsylvania.

In 1940 Philip was age 33 and had a wife Delia B. then age 50, born in New Hampshire. He had been born in Pennsylvania and was working as a jiggerman in the paper mill. Delia (Veasey) was the former wife of Willis Bartlett. Della's daughter Dorothy L. (Bartlett) Boynton age 34 and her son Raymond F. Burke age 9 were also in the household.

Married Elizabeth L. Couture of Ashland January 19, 1948 in Ashland.

In the 1950 census he was still working in the paper mill and was age 43. Also in the household was second wife Elizabthe L. then age 43 born New Hampshire and niece Anita L. Amsden then age 13.
