Joseph was raised in the Old Order German Baptist Brethren atmosphere, after 1881 he served the Hickory Grove congregation for many years, a Deacon of the Wolf Creek Church, 1852, he became a minister by 1858 and an Elder by 1880.
Buried in the Old German Baptist Brethren church's Hickory Grove Cemetery in southern Miami County.
