Obituary from Minutes of the 86th Annual Session of the State Convention of the Baptist Denomination in SC, held in Spartanburg,SC
November 27-30, 1906: Captain David M. Johnston, for many years a conspicuous figure in The Barnwell Baptist Association, died at his home near Elko, Sunday July 29th, in the 78th year of his age. He was a good citizen, a successful planter, a devout Christian, active and useful in his Church and Association, and loved and honored by all who knew him.
Selected as one of the first school board trustees of Elko District in 1891(From: Acts & Joint Resolutions of The General Assembly of the State of South Carolina, 1892)
Married 20th of February, 1876 to Jane Hair, according the widows pension
for his service during The War Between the States
