Bill was born February 21, 1930 in Yancey County, NC to the late James Waymon and Lena Gertrude Wiseman McMahan.
He was a veteran of the US Air Force and a founding member of Calvary Free Will Baptist Church in Swannanoa. Many people may remember Bill from his resale shop, "Whatever", on US 70 in the Swannanoa village before he moved to Greenville. In recent years, Bill was heavily involved with his church, Tabernacle Baptist Church and their Children's Home in Greenville, SC. Though residing in Greenville, Bill never forgot his Swannanoa Valley roots and returned weekly to have breakfast with friends at the Breakfast Shoppe on US 70 in Swannanoa. Bill was known for his humor, work ethic, generosity, and faith. He will be deeply missed by family and friends.
In addition to his parents, he is preceded in death by his wife, Clara Faye Crisp McMahan; daughter, Deborah Lynn Looper; and sisters, Maneva Mae Farr, Genevieve Robertson, and Doris Thelma McMahan Hampton.
Left to cherish his memory is his daughter, Wendy Lou Harris (David Andrew); son-in-law, Stephen Wayne Looper, grandchildren, James Bennett Harris (Brooke), Erin Alyssa Hamblen (Nate), Cara Ansley Brewton (Mark), Andrew Talmadge Looper (Stephanie), Jessica Caroline Looper, and Matthew Stephen Looper; and great grandchildren, Calista Celine Hamblen, Lucia Grace Hamblen, Pierce Lionel Hamblen, Charlotte Lynn Looper, Caroline Leigh Looper, Harbor Grace Harris, James Holden Harris, Hathaway Grey Harris, and Ava Clare Brewton; and many nieces and nephews.
The family will receive friends on Friday, May 19, 2023, from 11:00am to 1:00pm at Calvary Free Will Baptist Church, 2176 US 70 Hwy in Swannanoa. A celebration of life service will immediately follow at the church with the Rev. Alan Hines officiating.
A private interment will be in Crisp Family Cemetery.
