It is known that John J. Erwin is the child of James Erwin. This is from the Book History of North and West Texas, Volume II by B. B. (Buckley B.) Paddock. This book also shows that James' children were Lucena, John J., Thomas A., Abner, James C. and Frank.

There is a bible record, the bible belonged to John J. or his son, Benjamin, that states John's birthday is 19 Sep 1827.

There is a John J., born 19 Sep 1827, and a Thomas A., born 18 Jul 1830, listed in the bible of Isaac Erwin and Winney Richardson. It is supposed that this John J. was born and died the same day. There is no death listed in the bible. Isaac's children were listed in birth order and John and Thomas were listed in a different place. This shows that John and Thomas were not the children of Isaac and Winney but were related. It is also known that John J. lived very close to Isaac. DNA evidence futher proves a relationship between John J.'s descendants and Isaac Erwin's descendants.

There is NOT proof that:
1. His middle name is James.
2. His mother was Mary Elizabeth Jerrell. A James Erwin married a Mary Elizabeth Jerrell but there were many James Erwin's in the area at the time. Any one of these James could have married Mary Elizabeth Jerrell.
